SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Yonhap) — Police said Tuesday they were investigating the deaths of the father and grandparents of Leeteuk, a member of the popular K-pop boy band Super Junior.

Their bodies were discovered in their apartment in Shindaebang-dong, southwestern Seoul, at about 9:20 a.m. Monday by a relative.

The 84-year-old grandfather and 79-year-old grandmother were lying in bed covered with a blanket and the father, aged 57, was found hanging from a wardrobe door in his room, police said. The three are presumed to have died at about 11 p.m. Sunday, police added.

Officers found a suicide note at the site believed to be written by the father surnamed Park.

The exact contents of the note are not known, but sources say it read, “I’ll take my parents with me.”

Park, who formerly was a trader, was suffering from depression, the bereaved family said.

He had cared for his parents, both of whom had been suffering from dementia for years, police said.

Police said they were trying to determine the exact cause of the deaths but believe that Park killed himself after strangling his parents to death.

On Monday night, however, Leeteuk’s management company S.M. Entertainment had announced that the singer’s father and grandparents were killed in a car accident.

Leeteuk’s Father and Grandparents Funeral. On January 8, 2013 it was held.

The funeral of Super Junior leader Leeteuk’s father (Park Yong In), grandfather (Park Hyun Suk) and grandmother (Chun Kyung Tae), who passed away on Monday, was held at the funeral parlor in Korea University Guro Hospital yesterday.

To protect the privacy of Leeteuk (original name Park Jeong Su) and his family, SM Entertainment only allowed media coverage one hour before the proceedings took place. A grief-stricken Leeteuk and his actress-singer sister, Park In Young, were seen tearing profusely during the funeral.

Super Junior members, known for their brotherly bond, lent support to their leader since the wake on Monday night and helped carry the casket as pallbearers during the funeral.

Although initial reports stated that Leeteuk’s father and grandparents passed away from a car accident, Korean media later reported that the bodies were actually discovered inside their home in Dongjak, Seoul, by the police on Monday morning.

A suicide note written by Leeteuk’s father, aged 57, who is believed to have suffered from depression due to prolonged financial and mental stress of looking after his elderly and ill-health parents, was also reportedly found at the scene.

After Leeteuk’s parents divorced 16 years ago, the Super Junior leader and his father had allegedly not been on close terms. However, the father and son reconciliated before the singer left to serve his mandatory military service last October.

Suicide is believed to be the cause of deaths.

THE year got off to a tragic start for the family of K-pop group Super Junior leader Leeteuk. His father and grandparents were apparently found dead at home in Seoul this morning.

In what was earlier reported to be a car accident that killed the three, their deaths were later believed to be linked to suicide.

According to the allkpop website, police and fire department officials indicated that a note was found at the house where the bodies were discovered. The note is said to have been written by Leeteuk’s father, identified as Mr Park.

Allkpop today quoted one of the officials as saying: “At 9.26, we were dispatched to one apartment in the jurisdiction of Dongjak (a district in Seoul). When we arrived at the scene, all three had already passed away.”

The official revealed that the grandparents were found on the bed while Park was found hanged, says allkpop.

Their deaths are strongly believed to be linked to suicide.

Police are looking into medical records to confirm that Park was suffering from depression. Allkpop says Leeteuk’s father had been caring for his parents, who were afflicted by Alzheimer’s.

Leeteuk, 30, whose real name is Park Jeong-su, is currently serving his mandatory military service. The singer-songwriter-actor immediately took leave to return to the family upon receiving the devastating news.

He and his sister, as well as other family members and friends, are now gathered at the wake at the Korea University Medical Center (Guro Hospital) funeral parlour.

Singapore’s The Straits Times says that fellow Super Junior member Ryeowook was hosting his regular radio programme when the news broke and stayed on to finish the show even though he was clearly grieved by the news. The programme, Super Junior’s Kiss The Radio, is aired live and has live video feeds as well. The cameras were turned away from Ryeowook during the show.

Shindong, another member of the group, also has a regular radio show,ShimShimTapa. The production team for the programme left a message on their official Twitter today saying: “Today, Shindong’s ShimShimTapa will be broadcast under special DJs VIXX’s N and Baek Ah Yeon. There will be no viewable radio.”

It says that friends and fellow singers also sent messages of condolences through social media. 2AM’s Jo Kwon tweeted: “Please stay strong Leeteuk hyung (elder brother). May the deceased rest in peace.”

2PM’s Chansung simply wrote: “Stay strong Leeteuk hyung.”

Doojoon of B2ST wrote: “The hyung who is always smiling, who greets us with a smile even today without fail. That makes my heart hurt more. With respect, I hope the deceased rest in peace.”

UKiss’s Soohyun tweted: “Your heart must be in so much pain. With respect, I hope the deceased rest in peace. Have strength, Leeteuk hyung.”

Super Junior’s management agency, SM Entertainment, has appealed to the public to allow the family to grieve in peace.
