Champion skier Sarah Burke has died.
Burke sustained injuries on January 11, 2012 while practicing. She crashed at the bottom of the superpipe. Sadly, she underwent neurosurgery to repair a tear in one of the four major arteries to her brain.
According to Sports Illustrated, Burke tore her vertebral artery, which led to severe bleeding on the brain, causing her to go into cardiac arrest on the scene, where CPR was performed, according to the statement by publicist Nicole Wool.
Burke was in a coma at the University of Utah Medical Center.
Burke was a professional free-style skier from Canada. She’s won World Free Style Skiing Championships and gold medals Winter X-Games.
Burke’s organs and tissues were donated per her wishes.
