Paula Cooper was the ringleader in a grisly attack that killed Ruth Pelke in Indiana in 1985. Cooper was fifteen at the time she helped kill the 77-year-old bible seller, seemingly for $10 and her car keys.

Cooper was sentenced to death but her pleas for leniency and claims of her own child abuse got international attention, namely from then-Pope John Paul II who asked America to “defend life.” But Cooper’s greatest supporter was Ruth Pelke’s grandson Bill who says today, “I became convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that my grandmother would have had love and compassion for this girl.” Cooper will be released in less than a month. “Every good thing she does will bring honor to my grandmother,” Bill Pelke says.
