Clayton Pettet is in shock. Admittedly it’s his own doing. He is the 19-year-old performance artist from Central St Martins who announced he would stage the loss of his virginity with a fellow male student in front of a seated audience “of about a hundred”.
What he didn’t expect was that news of the event would ricochet around the world, from New York to China, Hungary to California. Or that it would invite a tidal backlash that has him accused of “a stunt that cheapens sexual relationships”. Or that it would result in his famous art school “distancing” itself from his work.
“I didn’t set out to shock,” Pettet protests. “My virginity wasn’t in any sense a gimmick. I’ve been developing this idea for a while. I thought, ‘Well, this might get a little bit of press in London closer to the event.’ But not this.”
