Leading K-pop singer Rain, who was discharged from his mandatory military earlier this month, has decided to make his first public appearance a mass fan meeting.

The fan meeting will be held at Kyung Hee University on Aug. 3, in an event organized by Rain’s official fan club, according to the singer’s new management agency, Cube Entertainment.

The agency added, however, that this fan meeting is not considered part of any official “comeback” to the entertainment scene and that Rain has not started work on a new album.

Many local media outlets have reported that Rain will take some time to rest before starting on any new music.

But while fans may have to wait to hear new songs by Rain, they will get at least one chance to hear their old favorites, as Rain is scheduled to participate in a Bangkok music festival called Sonic Bang on Aug. 24. Many Korean artists, including Epik High, and internationally-renowned ones, such as Far East Movement and Jason Mraz, are also scheduled to perform there.

South Korean pop icon Rain was officially released from mandatory military service Wednesday, with hundreds of fans shedding tears of joy over the star’s comeback.

About 700 devotees from South Korea and abroad exploded into ecstatic cheers as the 31-year-old K-pop star emerged from the defence ministry building in Seoul, where he had gone to receive his discharge papers.

Some banner-carrying fans, weary from camping out overnight in drizzling rain, broke into tears as the star walked out wearing a military uniform.

“Thank you all for coming to welcome me. I’ll do my best. I love you all,” Yonhap news agency quoted the singer as saying, as he gave fans a military salute.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-Hoon, is one of the biggest names in the world of K-pop, which commands a huge following in South Korea, across much of Asia and beyond.

In January, he was confined to barracks for a week after he was caught sneaking out for to meet a love interest while on official duty.

He was dating a Kim Tae-Hee, a TV drama star with a massive following in Japan.

South Korean men are obligated to serve about two years in the country’s armed forces.

Military service is taken extremely seriously in South Korea, which remains technically at war with North Korea because their 1950-53 conflict ended with a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty.

Apart from those with physical disabilities, exemptions are rare and anyone refusing to serve — for moral or religious reasons — faces an automatic jail term.

Celebrities are frequently caught attempting to evade military service for fear they might be forgotten by their fans while in uniform.

“Gangnam Style” star Psy was forced to serve twice after it emerged he had furthered his showbiz interests during his first stint.

Hallyu pop star Rain and popular actress Kim Tae Hee have been revealed to be dating, creating a firestorm on Korean Internet portals and forums, and among fans.

The relationship between the two was revealed when online entertainment site Dispatch published photos of Rain, 31, and Kim Tae Hee, 33, dating.

The photos showed Rain in military uniform and the actress emerging from the latter’s car in Seoul. The two wore face masks to hide their identities.

Rain is currently fulfilling his mandatory military service and will be discharged on July 10 this year.

Rain and Kim Tae Hee first met when they worked together in a TV commercial in 2011.

Quoting Dispatch, newspaper Chosun Ilbo said Rain and Kim Tae Hee “started seeing each other after Rain actively courted Kim. They went out on dates in parks and in the car while covering their faces with their hats and masks.”

It added, “Rain and Kim met each other every Sunday in December after Rain finished a radio program he hosts for the Defense Media Agency. Kim mostly came to pick him up using her car.”

The report said the two spent Christmas together with Kim Tae Hee spending Dec. 23 and 24 at Rain’s house and leaving before midnight.

Kim Tae Hee’s agency has eventually confirmed that the two are dating.

“It is true the two have feelings for each other, and they are currently getting to know each other better. It’s been about a month since the relationship began. Because they are such well-known celebrities, there are few places they can meet in public and they also have little time to meet due to their busy schedules,” the Chosun Ilbo quoted Kim Tae Hee’s agency, Lua Entertainment, as saying.

Rain, who has a rank of a corporal and is the Korean military’s honorary ambassador, has enlisted in the army in October 2011.

On the other hand, Kim Tae Hee is one of Korea’s most popular stars and commercial endorsers. She gained fame after starring in the hit dramas “Stairway to Heaven” and “Love Story in Harvard.”

But while many are thrilled about the relationship, the issues of Rain’s alleged excessive vacation days and preferential treatment by the military have surfaced.

Netizens said that because of his celebrity status, Rain was given more vacation days than other soldiers.

Since enlisting in the military, Rain got 94 days of leave and vacations, more than the 30 days a corporal would get, according to newspaper Korea JoongAng Daily.

Korea’s Ministry of National Defense defended Rain’s vacation days, saying the singer is working in the military’s promotion department.

“Rain has been dispatched to serve in the military’s promotion department, and unlike others, soldiers there have a lot of preparations to do to stage performances around the country. It is natural that they need more leave from their barracks,” the newspaper quoted a Defense Ministry official as saying.

The monthly salary of world star Rain who is currently serving in the army shocked many people. What surprised them more is that even with such little pay of 80,000 won($70.42) he confessed, “I have nowhere to use them.”

On April 8, Rain attended the 2012 Culture Festival for Army Recruits and had a talk with military personnel.

When military personnel went up the platform and asked, “I’m curious about how much money you have.” Rain wanted to be recognized as soldier Jung Ji Hoon rather than singer Rain, so he replied, “I’m sorry, but let us only talk about military related stories.” Entertainer soldier Lee Jin Ho, who emceed the event, asked Rain, “I heard that Rain is earning 80,000 won a month.”

Rain revealed, “I honestly have nowhere to spend my money. If I go back in I think I’ll be spending most of them on PX.” Rain who entered military in October of last year said, “I entered here exactly eight months ago. I now have a completely fresh viewpoint.”

The Culture Festival for Army Recruits is an event to express gratitude towards the young military soldiers and their parents.

South Korean pop icon Rain will serve as an “entertainment soldier” for the remainder of his two years of compulsory military service, according to the defence ministry.

Rain will appear in television and radio programmes of the Korean Forces Network, a broadcaster run by the ministry to boost morale, and take part in weekly concert tours to military units across the country.

“As he is a singer and dancer, he will do well as an ‘entertainment soldier’,” a ministry official told AFP on Friday.

Fans from across Asia wept last October when the 29-year-old entertainer entered boot camp to start his mandatory military service.

He was said to be adjusting well to military life, being judged a top marksman and groomed to become an assistant instructor.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-Hoon, is a major star in his home country and throughout much of the rest of Asia, where South Korean “K pop” commands a huge following.

All eligible South Korean men must spend about two years in the military. The country has remained technically at war with North Korea since their 1950-1953 conflict ended without a peace treaty.

Most start their spell around the age of 20. But Rain took advantage of a provision allowing famous entertainers to postpone their service.
