Earlier this March at the invitation of Tourism Australia and Huat films, we went on a summer road trip and hit the road with the 3 Peas in a Pod crew for a behind-the-scenes peek at the movie’s filming in Melbourne. On the actors’ day off after a fulfilling lunch with the entourage, we sat by Melbourne’s Yarra River for a short tête-à-tête with boyband member-turned-actor Calvin Chen.
It’s a picturesque scene with a bustling backdrop of a winding river, street buskers and riverside cafes, but we are busy dabbing sweat off our brows and fanning away with makeshift fans. The temperature’s rising – not because we’re seated opposite a hunky-dory Calvin, but because of a weather anomaly that caused Australia’s record-breaking hottest summer since 1910…
Fixed with the Mr. Perfect idol image sculpted from his Fahrenheit boyband days, Calvin’s played student-type roles throughout his acting career which started in 2005. While he plays a university student again in the upcoming Michelle Chong-directed 3 Peas in a Pod, this might be the last time he’s doing such roles, confessed the 32-year-old.
“After all, ge ge (older brother in Mandarin) is not getting any younger and I’m more mature now,” he cheekily added during his exclusive interview with xinmsn.
Decked in brown hipster frames and a denim outfit, Calvin looks nothing like his geeky and honest onscreen character, Perry. Echoing our thoughts, he quipped, “This is one of the biggest reasons why I took on this role; I want to do more roles that are unlike me as it is more challenging.”
While age is the reason why he plans to veer from such roles, ageing however, is the least of his concerns now.
“You don’t have to chase after youth. You just have to do the right thing at the right age,” he rationalised, citing that the acting skills of Hong Kong actors Nicholas Tse and Louis Koo have matured with time and both actors now exude manly charm and onscreen charisma because of their age, too.
Apart from attributing his maturity as an age thing, going solo also emphasises the need to be “even more focused” at work because he’s now solely responsible for his own actions.Forced to grapple with new responsibilities and being in the company of two bubbly co-stars (Alexander Lee Eusebio and Jae Liew) opened a floodgate of memories as Calvin fondly spoke of the good times spent with his Fahrenheit members.
Sometimes I really do miss my other Fahrenheit members especially when I’m alone in a foreign country, I can’t help but feel a little lonely,” he let on. “I miss the noise and fun with the other three members. Although we’ll all be tired from our late nights the next morning, it feels good when we rally around each other.”Calvin also revealed that former Fahrenheit member Wu Chun even sent him a few messages when he found out about his Melbourne trip. “He (Wu Chun) asked: ‘Where are you going to shop? Where are you going to eat? It’s a pity I can’t join you!’” he added with a grin.
If it’s of any consolation to Fahrenheit fans hoping to see the quartet back together on stage, Calvin revealed the boys “do miss one another a lot” and make it a point to update each other of their latest whereabouts. While there may not be a reunion in sight, at least the boys will stay friends for life.
