Whitney Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown struck back at claims he was responsible for getting the pop star hooked on drugs or that he somehow played a role in her cocaine-fueled death in February.
“I’m not the one that got Whitney on drugs, at all,” Brown said in an interview to be aired this week on the “Today” show on U.S. television network NBC.
“I’m not the reason she’s gone,” he added.
Houston, 48, was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub on February11 from what authorities called accidental drowning brought on by cocaine use and heart disease. White powder and drug paraphernalia were found in the bathroom where she died.
The singer had spoken publicly about a long battle with cocaine, marijuana and crack, particularly during her tempestuous 15-year marriage to Brown. They divorced in 2007, but some fans and members of Houston’s family have blamed Brown for her untimely death.
In his first TV interview since the singer died, Brown, 43, told “Today” show host Matt Lauer that he had been off drugs for seven years and was hurt to hear that Houston had been using cocaine.
“I was hurt … because, you know, me being off of narcotics for the last seven years – I felt that she was, you know, I didn’t know she was struggling with it still. But at the same time, you know – listen, it’s a hard fight,” he said.
Brown said drugs were part of Houston’s life before he met her in 1991. “I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs at all,” he said.
“So this was a part of her life before you and she got together?” Lauer asked.
“Way, way before. Yeah … It’s just, it’s just unexplainable – how one could, you know, (say that I) got her addicted to drugs. I’m not the reason she’s gone,” Brown replied.
Brown said Houston had a “glow about her” when he last saw her about a week before she died. He was at a restaurant having dinner with their daughter, Bobbi Kristina.
“She just looked like she was in a good place,” he said about the “I Will Always Love You” singer.
The interview will be aired on “Today” show on Wednesday and Thursday.
Brown turned up for Houston’s funeral in New Jersey but left before the service started saying he felt unwanted and disrespected.
Six weeks after Houston died, Brown was arrested and charged in Los Angeles with drunk driving and driving on a suspended license. Brown has pleaded not guilty.

According to AP, Officials in Southern California say Bobby Brown has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Harris says Brown was arrested around 12:20 p.m. Monday in the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles. He failed a field sobriety test and was booked on suspicion of DUI.
Harris says the R&B singer was pulled over after an officer saw him talking on his cellphone without a hands-free unit and noticed he appeared to be impaired.
Los Angeles police say Brown was released from jail on his own recognizance shortly before 2 p.m.
The 43-year-old is the ex-husband of Whitney Houston and a founding member of the group New Edition.
An email message to his attorney, Christopher Brown, was not immediately returned.
According CelebTV: The singer was busted by police for driving under the influence after reportedly being pulled over for talking on his cell phone.
THIS JUST IN… BOBBY BROWN HAS BEEN BUSTED FOR DUI…
WHITNEY HOUSTON’S EX WAS PULLED OVER IN L.A. MONDAY AFTERNOON REPORTEDLY BECAUSE HE WAS TALKING ON A CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING.
SOURCES TELL TMZ, IT’S UNCLEAR WHAT SUBSTANCE COPS BELIEVE BROWN HAD BEEN USING, BUT HE WAS ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE.
BROWN WAS BOOKED INTO VAN NUYS JAIL, WITH BAIL SET AT $50,250.
AND THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME BROWN’S BEEN BEHIND BARS…HE WAS CONVICTED OF DUI IN 1996, HE WAS ALSO ARRESTED FOR BATTERY IN 2008 AND AGAIN FOR A PAROLE VIOLATION IN 2005.
BROWN’S EXPECTED BACK IN COURT ON APRIL 20TH.
According to TMZ, Whitney Houston’s 19-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina got inconceivably richer the day her mother died — because the singer left Bobbi 100% of her assets in her will … an estate valued at around $20 million.
According to reports, Whitney’s will doesn’t enumerate specific assets — but she leaves ALL furnishings, clothing, personal effects, jewelry and cars to her surviving children … i.e. Bobbi.
According to reports, Houston’s money will be put in a trust — which Bobbi will have access to in stages … earning a portion when she turns 21, another chunk when she turns 25, and the rest when she turns 30.
The will was just filed today in Atlanta. Whitney signed it back in 1993, a month before she gave birth to Bobbi.
According to E!online, Whitney Houston’s family version of events about Bobby Brown‘s abrupt exit from his ex-wife’s funeral was discussed Tuesday with The Frank and Wanda Morning Show on Atlanta’s V103.
Houston family attorney Mark Trigg claimed that a combination of Brown not adhering to agreed-upon seating arrangements and bringing uninvited guests with him led to the kerfuffle that saw him leave just moments after arriving at Newark, N.J.’s New Hope Baptist Church.
Here’s how Trigg says things went down:
Trigg claims that Brown agreed he would sit in the first three pews reserved for Houston’s family and his three older children would sit with his brother Tommy a few rows behind. But once the service started, the lawyer says Bobby invited the trio to join him.
“When that happened, security discreetly, politely, respectfully said, ‘Bobby you’re welcome to stay here but we need to ask the three children to go sit with their uncle given space limitations.’ That was the deal and there shouldn’t have been any problem at that point. But for whatever reason, he took offense at that.”
There was also an issue with Bobby attempting to communicate with Bobbi Kristina—his 18-year-old daughter with Whitney. According to Trigg, Bobbi Kristina wanted to be left alone but Brown did not “respect her and her wishes during the service.” Trigg says that if his daughter had intervened, security would “not stand in the way” and would have made sure they connected.
But once security blocked him, he decided to leave.
“For whatever reason he decided he just wanted to leave the service. So he got his three children, went up and kissed the casket, and they walked out of the service,” said Trigg, noting that Brown previously told the family he wouldn’t be staying past 2 p.m. anyway as he had a concert with New Edition later that night.
Trigg’s account jibes with Brown’s own statement to E! News following his departure: “We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions. I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move. Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene.”
Despite the misunderstanding, Trigg says he sympathizes with the R&B star.
“It had to be a difficult time for him,” he said. “None of us exercise our best judgment when we’re under that kind of emotional strain. So I certainly don’t stand in judgment of him.”
As for why Houston’s mom, Cissy, didn’t allow Brown to speak at her funeral, Trigg would only say that such a decision ultimately rested with the family.
Cissy herself penned an open letter to her daughter that was included with the funeral program. After expressing her deep love for Whitney, Cissy revealed she had a premonition of Houston’s sudden death at age 48 and feared this day might come.
“You always gave without expecting anything in return and our love was the force that multiplied these blessings higher and higher,” wrote Cissy. “I never told you that when you were born the Holy Spirit told me that you would not be with me long and I thank God for the beautiful flower he allowed me to raise and cherish for 48 years.”
