The Singapore Hit Awards (SHA), which honours the greatest talents in Mandopop, is back.

Veteran singers like Jay Chou, JJ Lin as well as Penny Tai, lead this year’s SHA nominees list with a cool six nominations each.

Taiwan singer Jolin Tsai and pop trio S.H.E. trail close behind with four nominations each.

But it seems relative newcomers are getting their shot as well.

Singapore’s Serene Koong and vocal group MICapella both managed to snag two nominations.

Other notable nominees at this year’s SHA include Power Station, Super Junior M, and Tanya Chua.

Music professionals and media veterans will decide who wins the ten professional awards such as Album of the Year and Best Male Vocalist.

However, it’s the fans who will choose who wins the popularity awards like Most Popular Band/Group and Most Popular Female Artiste, by voting via SMS from Monday.

This year’s SHA will be held at the newly-renovated Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, at 7.30pm on November 22.

SHA steps out

The SHA will be made available to audiences in over twenty cities in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Holland, United States of America and Canada, for the first time this year.

Representatives from the media in these countries will get to pick the recipient of the new Global Eminence Award.

Mandopop fans around the world will also be able to watch the SHA through MediaCorp’s xinmsn and Toggle online platforms.

Why go global?

“Mandarin artistes and songwriters have held their own against the unrelenting Korean pop wave and emerged better and stronger with albums that appeal to a worldwide audience,” explained Y.E.S. 93.3FM Assistant Programme Director Cruz Teng, who heads the team organising this year’s SHA.

“With the Chinese population growing in major cities around the world, it is only apt that we join hands to celebrate Chinese music, wherever we may be.”

Singaporean singer JJ Lin recently revealed that not much has happened since his love confession to S.H.E’s Hebe Tian, and hoped that fans and the media will stop talking about it.

According to Hong Kong news, the singer, who successfully won four awards at the Metro Radio Mandarin Music Awards recently, dismissed speculations that Hebe’s absence from the event was to avoid him.

JJ expressed, “Hebe is not here today not because of me. She has another thing planned already.”

When asked if he would share his victory with Hebe, JJ was all smiles and stated, “No. I have to thank my fans.”

The embarrassed JJ, who was reminded of his very public love confession to the S.H.E star at his concert in July, laughed and said, “It depends on fate too. It’s useless if I only think about it. It’s better to be friends first.”

He added, “I hope everyone will not to talk about it anymore. There is no progress currently. Please give us some space to be friends first.”

JJ then disclosed that he has not seen Hebe since the concert.

JJ Lin wrapped up with a perfect performance at the Taipei Arena last weekend, for his 2013 Time Line World Tour, Taiwan show.  The Singaporean singer also took the opportunity to confess to his long – time crush, Hebe Tien, from popular Taiwanese girl group, S.H.E during the concert.

According to earlier reports, the 32-year-old has adored Hebe ever since he debuted in 2003. JJ expressed his admiration for the lady by inviting her on his elevated swing and sang her one of his hits, ‘Dou Jiang You Tiao’ (Soy bean and dough fritters) at one segment in his concert.

At his post-concert interview, the excited JJ revealed his nervousness, “I went all out! At that moment, I was actually very worried that she would reject me because I’ve heard that she was afraid of heights.”

Describing his time spent with Hebe as   “ more precious ” than clinching a Golden Melody award, he added, “Thank you (referring to Hebe) for accommodating to my request and coming to support me at my concert!”

The Mandopop singer also shared his future intentions to “ ask her out for a movie or dinner with the company of some friends ” to reduce the level of awkwardness between them.

Following JJ’s epic love declaration on Sunday, majority of fans from both sides have expressed their support for the two and urged them to “start dating officially ” . However, there were also a group of disapproving fans who warned JJ to lay his hands off their “ goddess ” .

Despite the hype, it seems like fans are the only ones rejoicing over JJ’s brazen confession as his plans to go on friendly dinner dates was met with lukewarm response from the 30-year-old singer. “I’m ok going out with friends,” said Hebe, when asked to comment on his suggestion.

ADDED: JJ Lin lost his beloved grandmother and will resume with his Time Line World Tour on Saturday July 20, 2013.

Shortly after JJ Lin’s spectacular concert shows and daring declaration to Hebe Tien at the Taipei Arena last weekend, the Mandopop singer made a hasty return to Singapore for his grandmother’s funeral.

Due to the hectic work schedule of JJ’s parents, the singer was raised singlehandedly by his grandmother. Due to his close relationship with his granny, JJ was in tears when he learned about her passing after a tough battle with liver cancer on Sunday afternoon.

His parents and elder brother, who were also at Taiwan for his 2013 Time Line World Tour, were immediately informed about granny’s deteriorating condition after the Saturday show. However, they decided to keep the news from the 32-year-old till the post-concert party, to prevent any distractions prior to his performance.

Meanwhile, JJ’s father took an early flight back to Singapore to handle the administrative procedures. The singer and his rest of the family only left Taiwan on Monday morning.

Yesterday night, JJ posted a family portrait and left a message in memory of his grandmother on weibo: “To my greatest granny, you will be missed by all of us. I will stay strong and take good care of my family!”

He added that his grandmother was a strong-minded woman who had fought her illness without a shed of tear.

JJ, who has since cancelled all his public events in China, will resume work this Saturday.

Not only did Jolin Tsai make a guest appearance at the second night of JJ Lin’s Taipei concert last night, the Mandopop diva also played matchmaker for the Singaporean singer, after she spotted Hebe Tien in the audience.

“Let me help you fulfill your wish today,” she told JJ, who previously expressed his admiration for the S.H.E member on several occasions.

Turning to Hebe, Jolin sang praises of JJ by commenting that he is a “great guy” and asked if she would “accept his invitation to be friends”. The songstress then went on to suggest that the two share a hug, while JJ shyly said, “Thanks for coming to the concert tonight.”

That was not the end of their interaction. The singer surprised Hebe with a cup of soy milk when he performed the song “Dou Jiang You Tiao” (Soy milk and dough fritters), and asked for another hug, drawing deafening screams from the fans.

During the segment where he was supposed to sit on the elevated swing to go around the arena, JJ again invited Hebe to go on the “ride” with him and serenaded her with the sweet ballad “Little Dimple”.

Although JJ was fined NT$50,000 (approximately S$2,115) for the concert on Saturday which overran by five minutes due to his long speech, sales of the concert merchandise from his own fashion label raked in nearly NT$3 million (S$127,000) for the singer.

Typhoon Soulik proved to be of no threat to JJ Lin’s fans as they showed up at his concert at the Taipei Arena last weekend undeterred by warnings of heavy rain and flooding. Although the singer previously announced that tickets would be fully refunded due to the weather condition, there was hardly any empty seats spotted at the venue.

“I’m son of the sun. Everything will be fine!” he hollered, while expressing his gratitude towards the 10,000-strong crowd.

Kicking off the very first show of his Time Line World Tour, JJ descended on an extended stage with a customised “gear wheel piano” reportedly worth NT$2 million (approximately S$84,000).

Be it stage design or costumes, the singer spared no expense from his black LED diamante encrusted armour to the “man-made rain” segment during the show.

JJ also paid tribute to his late idol Michael Jackson by performing the song “Billie Jean” in the “rain”, which amounted to an estimated NT$3.5 million (S$140,000) in production fees. Despite being soaked from head to toe, he continued performing two more songs before he wowed the crowd by removing his jacket and showing off his biceps.

The audience, who were seated at the second level, got the biggest bang for their buck with upclose interactions with the singer. One such lucky fan even joined JJ on his elevated swing which transported them around the arena.

“Are there any couples that have dated for 10 years who are here tonight? I do have a 10-year lover – all of you,” said the honey-tongued singer.

JJ performed a total of 33 songs on Saturday night at his concert which saw the attendance of celebrity friends such as Jimmy Lin, Jam Hsiao, Gillian Chung, Mark Chao and Ricky Hsiao.

Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin recently dedicated a song for his recently deceased grandmother at his concert show in Shenzhen. According to Apple Daily website, the singer, who postponed his activities earlier this month to attend to his beloved grandmother’s funeral, returned to work on 28 July to continue with his 2013 Time Line World Tour. During the show that was attended by around 10,000 fans, the singer mourned his grandmother’s passing and dedicated one of his hits, “Someday” to her. The singer was teary-eyed as he shared his sadness on the loss, and expressed, “This is an old song that I have not sung for quite a long time. Today I am dedicating this song to my grandmother. She never shed a tear during her illness, so I will not cry. I better not cry now.” The sombre mood of the show was lightened up hours later, when Hong Kong singer, Charlene Choi appeared to perform their duet, “Little Dimples” together. Reminding JJ about his love declaration to Hebe Tien in one of his earlier shows in Taiwan, Charlene invited a smile on JJ’s face. JJ Lin dedicates "Someday" to late grandmother

Wilber Pan, who had once admitted to liking Jolin Tsai, praised S.H.E. member Hebe Tien for being “cute and pretty” yesterday.

At an event for the 2012’s Metro Street Dance Competition in Taiwan yesterday, which the singer is ambassador of, Wilber gave a candid shout-out to Jolin Tsai, , whom he had admitted to admire in 2005.

“You must still like me,” Wilber jokes, before giving his blessings to Jolin, who is currently in a stable relationship with model Vivian Dawson.

The 31-year-old went on to lavish praises on fellow singer Hebe saying that she is “very cute, and is getting prettier”.

Wilber also added that the songstress is “full of talent and (will have) a lot of guys will fall in love with her.”

However, when the media present informed him that Singaporean singer JJ Lin likes Hebe too, even to the extent of calling her his “goddess”, Wilber appeared shocked and expressed his disbelief.

“That can’t be!” he exclaimed.

In other related news, Wilber is due to perform his new song during the finals of the competition and hopes that fans will anticipate his new album.

Singapore singer, JJ Lin, failed to get any nominations for this year’s Taiwan Golden Melody Awards, leading many to question the ceremony’s credibility.

JJ expressed his disappointment at not receiving a nomination on his microblog yesterday. The singer added that he “respects the judges’ decisions” and believed that “it is more important if everyone accepts my music.”

“There’s no need to console me [for not getting nominated] because I know I still have a long way, and many more good songs to write. I believe that in the music scene, good music will be the music that can be accepted by everyone,” the 31-year-old continued in the post on his microblog.

JJ’s statement received support from netizens and the singer’s “goddess”, S.H.E. member Hebe Tien reposted his message for the first time, adding that JJ is “very good! I acknowledge your work!”

This caused a buzz on the Internet as netizens urged the pair to “get together” and joked with JJ that “Hebe’s encouragement is better than received a Golden Melody Award.”

Fellow S.H.E. member, JJ’s good friend Ella Chen even teased the singer, “This time round, you are on cloud nine!!”
